"Mummy! Daddy! Tell me the Words!"
Falkirk and West Lothian branch members review their favourite children's books,
Summer 2007

If like me you are followed round the house by a toddler clutching a book, demanding you read it for the umpteenth time, you are probably desperate for something with a half decent story line and maybe even some humour or rhyme! Pick and choose from some other people’s favourites.

Rachael – mum to Carlotta, 8 months
“Pants” By Giles Andreae and Nick Sharratt
Amazing, fantastic, we both love it. All about pants.."small pants, big pants, giant frilly pig pants, new pants, blue pants, one, two, three." It rhymes, has lots of lovely colour pictures and is the first book I have learnt off by heart (although I am sure that this is the first of many)

Elizabeth – mum to Amélie, 7 months
“The Incredible Book Eating Boy” By Oliver Jeffers

A must for any mum or dad who’s little one chews all the books in sight; this is the mouth-watering tale of a boy's insatiable appetite. Henry loves books...he loves to EAT books! And better yet, each book he eats makes him smarter. But a book-eating diet isn't the healthiest of habits, as Henry soon finds out.

Paul – dad to Morven, 2 ½ years and Finlay, 8 months
“Duck in a Truck” By Jez Alborough

‘This is the tale of a duck in a truck,
A truck that was stuck in some yucky, brown muck.
A sheep in a jeep and a frog in a bush
Saw the truck stuck and gave it a push.
But the truck stayed stuck!
What now, can you guess?
Could a goat in a boat
Get them out of this mess?’
Its brill, made all the better by the fact that Morven’s Granny buried her 4x4 in a field of mud the week before we got the book.

Catherine – mum to Alistair, 18 months
“Wombat Devine” By Mem Fox.

Mem Fox is an Australian author - this is a Christmas book sent over from my sis in Melbourne last year (although I know it is published in Uk too). All about a wombat
who wants to appear in the nativity but struggles to find a role that fits. Truly the sweetest book I've read and Al loves the pics

Julia – mum to Angus, 2 ½ years
“I'll Be Your Friend, Smudge!” By Miriam Moss

Bought at a cheap bookshop this has been one of our all time favourites. Perfect for a family that is moving away from friends as it is all about a mouse who has moved and has no friends to celebrate her birthday with. I can read this book with my eyes shut and my son loves it still (after a year of reading).

Emma-Jane – mum to Jacob, 15 months
“The Gruffalo” by Julia Donaldson and Axel Sheaffer

My favourite book to read to Jacob. Its so well written and funny.
Usborne ‘Look and Say’ books
My favourite book to look at with Jacob. Even though he can’t say, he enjoys pointing to things and loves the big tabs at the edge so he can turn the page.

Fiona – mum to Alice, 9 months and a baby on the way
“Each Peach Pear Plum” by Allan Ahlberg and Janet Ahlberg

I like pictures with lots to look at and different things to point outrhyming from page to page- I can now read it with my eyes closed!

Joy – Mum to Cameron, 4yrs
“Mr Men Books” by Roger Hargreaves.

Cameron got the Mr Men bug when I raided the loft at my parents house and found some Mr Men books I read as a child. Now we are well on our way to having the whole set. Great pictures, silly stories, small enough to be popped into a bag and cheap to buy. Mr Tickle is Cameron’s favourite. “You didn’t know that there was such a thing as a tickle, did you? Well, there is! Tickles are small and round and they have arms that stretch and stretch and stretch, Extraordinary long arms!”
